Legislative Alert – Australia Proposed Reforms to State’s Dog and Cat Management Act

South Australia is seeking to toughen penalties on dogs that attack, especially if incited by the owner which, by their logic, means prohibiting the sport that trains dogs to attack, IGP.  According to the proposed law, when a dog owner deliberately encourages their pet to attack or harass a person or animal, the owner could be fined up to $100,000 or be jailed for 4 years.

Members located in South Australia can submit their opinions before 11 June 2024. To read the proposed amendment in full and to voice your thoughts, please visit: Dog and Cat Management (Breeder Reforms) Amendment Bill 2024

In addition to submitting your opinions directly to government officials via the above link, there is petition circulating regarding bite sports specifically on Change.org

The proposed amendment will also place stricter requirements on breeders in an effort to eliminate puppy mills and irresponsible breeding practices. If you are a breeder in South Australia, we’d like to hear from you regarding these changes. Please e-mail us at [email protected].
