Description

“When I was young, I dreamed a dream of a world filled with healthy, beautiful dogs that were free to go anywhere and everywhere with us.”
Patricia Varian

My philosophy for training dogs is similar to my parenting ideas: all children are different, and what is best for one, may be the worst thing for another. I match my training techniques to each dog and person to find the right fit, rather than force dog and owner through one program. My hope is to teach all dog owners how to effectively communicate with their dogs and gain control of them, so that their dogs can experience freedom.
It breaks my heart to see so many laws taking away dogs’ freedoms, simply because of some owner’s irresponsibility. Too many owners have no idea that their dogs aren’t aggressive, they aren’t “out of control,” but only act that way because they haven’t been taught otherwise. But they all truly can learn behave appropriately.
I am dedicated to fighting for dogs’ rights as I am dedicated to improving the bloodlines of the dogs I breed. I believe all puppies should be planned, and with diligence, we can wipe out many of the diseases that plague dogs today. It’s important to support good breeders, as it is very expensive , time consuming, and it is at times heartbreaking when things don’t go as planned. But if we give up, we leave the next generation of dogs to the hands of chance, or greedy puppy mill breeders who care nothing about the health, temperament, and intelligence of future generations.
If we give up, we will no longer have all the amazing breeds which differ as much as we, the human race, differs. Without the opportunity to choose dogs that match our own personalities and lifestyles, the number of abandoned dogs will only increase, as people find the adorable little puppy they brought home grew into a dog that does not fit them at all. Pounds are filled with these mismatches, such as the elderly women who end up with a high-drive shepherd mix, or the runner who ends up with a dog who only wants to lay on the couch.
Sadder still is losing your best friend without having a way to find another one that matches your soul. If the dog of your dreams was a well-bred dog, you can indeed find him again, in the next generation, as long as dedicated breeders don’t give up.

Patricia has trained dogs for over 40 years, including working at Guide Dogs for the Blind, competing in AKC and NAHRA events, and earning titles on many dogs. In the last 15 years she has become more active training service and therapy dogs, after a long-term illness helped her realize the importance of her God-given gifts to train dogs to help people. She also rescues and rehabilitates dogs of all breeds, sizes, ages, and issues, many of which go on to become service dogs.
Patricia is an evaluator for AKC Canine Good Citizenship and a member of International Association of Canine Professionals. She has trained therapy dogs with Therapy Dogs International, as well as service dogs for children with Autism, warriors with PTSD, and people with mobility issues. Patricia trains the owners as well as their dogs, giving private and group lessons and workshops. She creates personal videos of the dogs who come and stay with her to train, and she provides in-home training for even more personal care.
“Varian Kennels” is registered with AKC and is a “Breeder of Good Merit.” It has earned outstanding remarks from visiting AKC inspectors. Patricia started using the "Power of the Pack" in the last 30 years and has at any given time between 7 and 12 well trained and socialized dogs that help her train and rehabilitate other dogs. Most of these are her top quality AKC breeding dogs, dogs that are not only beautiful and intelligent, but have passed rigorous health standards. She recently has been accepted into the “Good Dog” breeding group, which promotes responsible breeders and breeding programs.
